The Problem with Webrings (and How We’re Fixing It)

A magnifying glass with a red X, a broken chain link, and a smiling face are connected by a dashed line on a pastel background, symbolizing the quirky spirit of the indie web and webring communities.

Webrings are having a moment. Again.  And if you’ve dipped your toe into the scene, you’ve probably noticed two things:

  1. The idea is charming.
  2. The experience… usually isn’t.

Let’s talk about that second part.

What’s always been broken

Old-school webrings were quirky – and we love that. But they also had some issues:

  • Dead links. A third of the sites were often down. Some hadn’t been touched since 2002.
  • Inconsistent design. One ring would use ASCII art, another a mysterious dropdown. You never quite knew what you were clicking.
  • Zero curation. Anyone could join, which was great in theory… but chaotic in practice.
  • No context. You’d land on a random site and have no idea why it was in the ring.
  • No control. For ring creators, managing submissions felt like herding cats with dial-up lag.

It was the wild west – pixelated, delightful, and deeply confusing.

What we’re doing differently

Webring Studio keeps the soul of webrings but adds a layer of intention, clarity, and joy.

Here’s what that looks like:

  • Every ring is curated. You decide who joins your ring – and what the vibe is. You’re not just making a list. You’re shaping a space.
  • You can make your own. Easily. With clear tools, a dashboard, and optional AI naming help.
  • No broken loops. If someone’s site disappears, we gracefully skip over them – no weird 404 detours.
  • It looks good. No shade to the retro folks (we see you, <marquee> fans), but you can embed rings in your site with modern, minimal flair.

This isn’t nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake. It’s a thoughtful evolution of a good idea – one that still has real power today.

You don’t have to create your own ring to belong

  • You don’t have to host a ring. Just want to be part of something? You can join an existing ring that fits your style. We’ve made it easy to apply, get accepted, and start connecting with like-minded sites – no setup required.
  • Your site gets seen – by people who care. Webring visitors tend to explore slowly and intentionally. If you’re part of a good ring, you’re being discovered by curious humans, not just drive-by clicks.
  • No SEO games. Just vibes. Being in a ring isn’t about keywords or rankings. It’s about showing up as your full self and being found because of it.

A webring worth being part of

You deserve a ring that reflects the care you’ve poured into your site. A ring where visitors want to click next – not because they’re lost, but because they’re curious.

That’s what we’re building. One link at a time.

Spread the love – retro style
